Firearms Safety & Basic Training

Firearm ownership carries serious responsibility. Safe handling, lawful use, and ongoing training are essential to protecting yourself, your family, and the community. This page provides introductory, non-technical guidance for new and experienced firearm owners alike.

Note: This page is educational only and does not replace hands-on instruction from a qualified instructor.

The Four Universal Rules of Firearms Safety

These rules apply at all times, regardless of experience level.

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.
  2. Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you are ready to shoot.
  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Basic Firearm Handling Principles

Safe Direction

Always keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction—one where an unintentional discharge would not cause injury or damage.

Loading & Unloading

-Verify the firearm is unloaded before handling

-Remove the magazine first

-Open the action and visually and physically inspect the chamber

Transportation

-Transport firearms unloaded

-Use a case or lock as required

-Don’t leave firearms unattended

Fundamentals of Marksmanship (High-Level)

  • Grip – secure and consistent
  • Stance – balanced and stable
  • Sight alignment & sight picture – front sight focus
  • Trigger control – smooth, controlled press
  • Follow-through – maintain control after the shot

These are concepts—not hands-on instruction. Formal training is strongly recommended to build safe, consistent fundamentals.

Safe Storage & Access Prevention

Responsible storage protects children, visitors, and helps prevent theft. Safe storage is a core part of responsible ownership.

  • Use safes, lockboxes, or cable locks
  • Store ammunition securely
  • Educate family members appropriately

Know the Law

Firearm laws vary significantly by state and can change. Always verify current law using official resources.

  • Ownership and permit requirements
  • Transportation and carry laws
  • Storage obligations
  • Prohibited locations
  • Use-of-force standards (generally)

Reminder: This is not legal advice. If you have a specific situation, consult a qualified attorney.

De-Escalation & Avoidance

Firearms are tools of last resort. Responsible ownership includes avoiding conflict whenever possible.

  • Situational awareness
  • Avoidance and retreat when possible
  • Understanding use-of-force principles (general)
  • Legal and moral consequences of defensive use

Training & Education Opportunities

We encourage hands-on training with qualified instructors and regular refreshers. Hawaii Firearms Coalition supports lawful, responsible, and educated firearm ownership.

  • In-person safety courses
  • Range instruction with certified instructors
  • Ongoing refresher training
  • Youth and family safety education (where lawful)
